GST Audit in brief
A GST audit examines whether your returns, tax paid, input tax credit and records match the law. Under Section 65 the tax department can audit a registered person; Section 66 allows a special audit by a nominated chartered or cost accountant. A voluntary GST health check finds errors early so they can be fixed with less penalty.
Since 2021 the mandatory self-certified audit has been replaced by a reconciliation statement for larger taxpayers, but audits have not disappeared. The department can select any registered person for audit, and data analytics now flag mismatches between GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B, e-way bills and e-invoices automatically.
Our GST audit service has two parts. The first is a GST health check that you can commission at any time — we review a financial year of returns and books and give you a list of errors, exposures and corrections. The second is audit representation: if you receive an audit intimation, we prepare the records, attend the audit, answer observations and, if required, file replies and settle liability.
A well-prepared audit usually ends with a minor adjustment. A poorly prepared one can lead to demand notices with interest and penalty, so we prefer to start the review well before the department does.
Who should use GST Audit
- Businesses that have received a GST audit intimation (Form GST ADT-01).
- Companies and firms with turnover above ₹5 crore that file the annual return and reconciliation statement.
- Taxpayers who claimed substantial ITC and want to confirm it is eligible.
- Businesses planning a loan, funding round or acquisition where due diligence will examine GST compliance.
- Anyone who has received a mismatch notice (ASMT-10) and wants an independent review.
Why it matters for your business
Early error detection
Fix wrong ITC, rate mistakes and unreported supplies before they turn into demand notices.
Lower penalty exposure
Voluntary correction with interest generally costs less than a demand with penalty.
Audit-ready records
Organised ledgers, reconciliations and working papers make the departmental audit short and calm.
Investor and lender confidence
A clean GST position supports due diligence and credit limits.

Corrections and filing
We prepare DRC-03 payments, amendments and revised procedures, and file where required.
Audit representation
If the department audits you, we prepare, attend and reply to observations (ADT-02) on your behalf.
Documents and information required
- Filed GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C (if applicable)
- Trial balance, ledgers, sales and purchase registers
- GSTR-2A/2B downloads and ITC ledger
- E-way bill and e-invoice summaries
- Previous notices, orders and replies
- Agreements, price lists and any exemption or concessional rate documents
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Waiting for a notice to start reconciling GSTR-2B and books.
- Claiming ITC on blocked items such as personal vehicles, food and club memberships.
- Ignoring differences between GSTR-1 turnover and the books or financial statements.
- Replying to an audit observation without supporting documents.
- Treating the annual return as a formality and filing numbers that do not tie to the accounts.
How we help you stay compliant after GST Audit
After the review we help you fix root causes: invoice discipline, HSN master data, ITC processes and monthly reconciliation. This is how your compliance stays clean instead of being rebuilt once a year.
If your turnover or complexity grows we add a quarterly review, so errors never accumulate for twelve months. This approach is also the cheapest — a short monthly check is far less expensive than defending a multi-year demand.

Learn moreGST Audit — frequently asked questions
Is a GST audit mandatory?
Annual GST audit by a chartered accountant is no longer mandatory, but taxpayers above the specified turnover file a self-certified reconciliation statement with the annual return. Separately, the department may audit any registered person under Section 65.
How much notice does the department give for an audit?
The department normally gives advance written intimation, with time to prepare. We recommend a quick internal review immediately after receiving it.
What does a GST health check include?
Return-to-books reconciliation, ITC eligibility review, rate and HSN checks, RCM review, e-way bill and e-invoice consistency checks, and a corrections plan.
Can errors be fixed before the audit?
In many cases yes. Short-paid tax with interest can often be paid voluntarily through Form DRC-03, which usually costs less than a demand order.
Do you represent us before the tax officer?
Yes. We prepare records, attend audit sessions where permitted, and file written replies to observations and notices.
