GST Assessment in brief
GST assessment is how the tax authority determines your liability — through self-assessment, scrutiny of returns, or best-judgment assessment for non-filers. If you receive a notice such as ASMT-10 or a show-cause notice (DRC-01), you must reply within the stated time with documents. Missing the deadline can lead to an ex-parte order.
GST is a self-assessment tax. You calculate and pay it, and the department can scrutinise your returns later. If the system or an officer finds differences, you receive a notice, and the reply you file becomes the foundation of the case. Many demands arise from simple matters — a supplier who failed to file, a timing difference, a misclassification — that could have been closed with the right explanation.
We read each notice carefully, identify the section invoked and the amount at stake, collect supporting evidence, and prepare a reply that is factual, concise and legally grounded. If the matter moves to personal hearing, we prepare a short brief; if an order is passed, we advise on appeal timelines and the pre-deposit.
Time is the main risk. A notice usually specifies a short window for reply, and ignoring it can result in an order by default, with interest and penalty added. Share any notice with us the day it arrives.
Who should use GST Assessment
- Taxpayers who received ASMT-10 scrutiny notices after return mismatch.
- Businesses served show-cause notices under Section 73 or 74 with tax, interest and penalty.
- Non-filers facing best-judgment assessment under Section 62.
- Taxpayers with ITC denial due to supplier defaults or mismatch with GSTR-2B.
- Businesses planning an appeal against an adjudication order.

Documents and information required
- The notice, with date and reference number
- GST returns for the period in question
- Purchase and sales registers, ledgers and bank statements
- Supplier invoices, e-way bills and transport proofs
- Any earlier correspondence with the department
- Explanatory note from your accounts team on the issue
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Ignoring a notice because the amount looks small.
- Replying without checking the exact section and the period covered.
- Submitting unorganised documents that the officer cannot verify.
- Paying the demand without reply when the claim is incorrect, losing the chance to contest.
- Missing the appeal limit after an order.
How we help you stay compliant after GST Assessment
Once the matter closes we fix the root cause — usually ITC reconciliation, invoice data or classification — so the same issue does not recur in the next period. We also update your compliance calendar and, where relevant, your supplier follow-up process.
If a similar issue is likely in other years, we advise whether to correct it voluntarily through DRC-03 or amendments, which can limit penalties compared with waiting for a notice.

Learn moreGST Assessment — frequently asked questions
What should I do first when I get a GST notice?
Do not ignore it. Note the reply deadline, download the full notice and attachments, and send them to us the same day. We will confirm the section and plan the response.
Can a GST notice be avoided?
Often yes — monthly reconciliation between sales, purchases, GSTR-2B and e-way bills prevents the majority of notices.
What if the supplier did not file their return?
ITC rules depend on credit appearing in your GSTR-2B. We help you document the purchase, follow up with the supplier and, where possible, claim the credit once it appears.
Can I get more time to reply?
You can request an adjournment or extension in writing before the due date, giving reasons. We prepare and file this request where appropriate.
Do you handle appeals?
Yes. We prepare the appeal memorandum, compute pre-deposit and represent you through the process, working with an advocate where the matter requires.
