E-Way Bill in brief

An e-way bill is an electronic document required to move goods worth more than ₹50,000 by road, rail, air or ship. It has Part A (invoice details) and Part B (vehicle details). Validity is generally one day for each 200 km of distance. Moving goods without a valid e-way bill can lead to detention and penalty.

The e-way bill system connects your invoices, transport and returns. A missing or incorrect e-way bill can cause vehicle detention at checkpoints, penalty and delays that cost more than the compliance itself. Equally, the data in e-way bills is compared with GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B by the department, so repeated errors lead to notices.

We help businesses set up e-way bill generation from their billing software or the portal, train staff, and provide on-call assistance for urgent consignments. We also advise on special cases — transport by the supplier or recipient, goods sent for job work, stock transfers between branches, and multi-vehicle movement.

For transporters we assist with GSTR-1 reporting of consignment notes, consolidated e-way bills and rules on blocked e-way bill generation when returns are not filed.

FAQs

E-Way Bill — frequently asked questions

When is an e-way bill required?

Generally for movement of goods with consignment value above ₹50,000. Some goods are exempt, and specific state rules apply to intra-state movement.

What is the validity of an e-way bill?

One day for every 200 km or part thereof for regular cargo, and one day per 20 km for over-dimensional cargo.

Can I cancel an e-way bill?

Yes, within 24 hours of generation if goods have not been moved or verified.

Who generates the e-way bill?

The registered supplier, recipient or transporter can generate it. For supplies by unregistered persons, the recipient may need to generate it.

Why can’t I generate an e-way bill?

A common reason is non-filing of GSTR-3B for the prescribed number of periods. We help you regularise returns so generation resumes.
