E-Invoicing in brief

E-invoicing requires B2B invoices to be registered on the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which returns an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a QR code. It applies to businesses whose aggregate annual turnover exceeds ₹5 crore. Taxpayers with turnover of ₹10 crore and above must report e-invoices within 30 days of the invoice date.

E-invoicing changes how a tax invoice is created: it is generated by your billing software, validated by the government’s IRP and returned with an IRN and QR code. Unreported invoices may not be valid for input tax credit by the buyer, and late reporting can lock you out of generating further invoices for that date window.

We assess applicability, help you register on the e-invoice portal, set up the API or offline utility, configure invoice templates and test sample invoices. For Zoho Books and other ERP users we configure direct integration so e-invoice and e-way bill data are generated together.

We also handle common exceptions: credit notes, debit notes, exports, SEZ supplies, B2C dynamic QR codes (where applicable) and the correct treatment of cancelled invoices.

Documents

Documents and information required

  • GSTIN and turnover details for the past years
  • Sample invoices and credit note formats
  • Billing/ERP software details
  • Portal login and API credentials
  • Master data of customers (GSTIN, addresses)
  • HSN master
Avoid errors

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Generating invoices outside the system and trying to report later.
  • Missing the 30-day reporting limit.
  • Not cancelling the IRN within time when an invoice is wrongly issued.
  • Wrong GSTIN or place of supply data in the invoice master.
  • Using an unvalidated custom template.
Ongoing compliance

How we help you stay compliant after E-Invoicing

After go-live we monitor IRN generation rates and failed invoices every month so a systemic error — like a master data issue — is fixed quickly.

We also keep you aware of threshold or reporting-window changes so the process does not break when rules change.

FAQs

E-Invoicing — frequently asked questions

Is e-invoicing applicable to my business?

It applies if your aggregate annual turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18. B2B, export and SEZ invoices must be reported.

What is an IRN?

An Invoice Reference Number is a unique 64-character hash generated by the IRP when an invoice is registered.

Do I need e-invoicing for B2C invoices?

Generally no, though very large taxpayers must show a dynamic QR code on B2C invoices. Check the latest notification for the current threshold.

What if I miss the 30-day limit?

For taxpayers covered by the limit, the IRP will not accept the invoice, which can affect your customer’s credit. Plan billing cut-offs carefully.

Can Zoho Books generate e-invoices?

Yes. Zoho Books supports e-invoicing and e-way bills for Indian GST users once configured, and we can set it up.
